Why CBD Oil for Pain?
There is a high chance that we will suffer some form of constant or continual pain at some point in our lives.
Traditionally, constant and chronic pain has been treated with opioid-based painkillers.
In recent years, however, the consequences of opioid dependence have become more apparent, and it is clear that they are not a long term solution.
Enter CBD (aka cannabidiol), a compound derived from cannabis that has natural pain managing qualities with none of the drawbacks of opioid-based painkillers.
Preliminary studies in CBD oil have shown it to be effective in alleviating pain associated with many health conditions, including fibromyalgia, Crohn’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Huntington’s disease, as well as various forms of Cancer.
The more research is undertaken, the more benefits we can clarify from CBD/cannabidiol as a form of pain relief.
How Does CBD Work for Pain Relief?
CBD is one of many compounds found within the hemp plant. These compounds are known as ‘Cannabinoids.’ The most researched and well-known cannabinoids are THC and CBD. However, there are well over 80 different cannabinoids found in cannabis.
THC is the compound most will associate with cannabis, as it is responsible for strong psychoactive effects and the infamous ‘munchies.’
CBD, however, is non-psychoactive and is scientifically proven to provide a multitude of health benefits. CBD, as well as other cannabinoids, work by interacting with the body’s own endocannabinoid system.
All mammals have this system, which governs much of the body’s functions. Our body produces its own cannabinoids, which are then picked up by our cannabinoid receptors, which can regulate our immune system, bone growth, mood, appetite, and many others.
By using CBD products and introducing plant-based cannabinoids into our body, we can stimulate these receptors and reap the benefits of our own natural endocannabinoid system.
What Are Potential CBD Therapeutic Applications for Pain?
Not all pain can be treated the same way. There are many different triggers for pain, and the specific experience is different for everyone. There are 3 main types of pain: neuropathic, nociceptive, and the general “other.”
Neuropathic pain is associated directly with the nervous system. Nociceptive results from tissue damage and the more general “other” type of pain have no clear source, perhaps stemming from neurological dysfunction.
Many people using CBD oil now use it to treat a multitude of pain types. However, research is currently underway to prove the effectiveness of CBD to combat specific types of pain.

CBD Oil for Chronic pain
A 2008 review compiled all the studies conducted on CBD oil from the late 1980s until 2007 and concluded that CBD was effective in overall pain management without producing any adverse side effects.
It was also concluded that CBD was effective in easing insomnia related to chronic pain.
CBD for Arthritic Pain Relief
The natural anti-inflammatory qualities of CBD make it ideal for those who have arthritis. A study undertaken in 2016 on rats showed that CBD oil successfully treated the pain associated with arthritis whilst showing no signs of any side effects.
CBD Oils as Adjunctive for Cancer Treatment
CBD has gained a lot of popularity with cancer patients for its ability to deal with cancer-related pain and the harsh side effects of chemotherapy. Most impressive is the amount of patients actively switching to CBD over conventional treatments.
In one particular study, patients who were taking CBD oil as part of the research carried on with the CBD therapy even after the study was completed.
Research into CBD oil and its effect on cancer is still ongoing, but there is great potential.
Determining Correct CBD Dosage for Pain
CBD dosage is different for everyone, as covered in one of our previous blogs here. There are many variables to consider, including weight, age, existing conditions, etc.
However, it is reassuring to know that there is no lethal dose of CBD and that there are no serious side effects at any dosage level.
This means that patients are free to find a level that works for them, safe knowing they won’t do themselves any harm.
CBD Dosage for Pain
When dosing to treat chronic or constant pain, the required level of CBD will be higher than that of other illnesses.
Typically, when starting with CBD oil pain therapy, it is best to begin at about 5 to 10 milligrams a day and slowly build that dosage.
Do keep in mind that the dose will need to increase for effective relief.

The Basic CBD Oil Dosage Guidelines:
Start with a low dose, around 5 to 10 milligrams.
Go slow and maintain that dosage for at least two to three days. Make an increase every few days, up to 25 mg, then 50 mg, and then 100 mg.
You can divide these doses during the day. Remember that CBD oil works best by building up over time.
Keep a journal and monitor your mood, cravings, sleep quality, and check for other medications interactions.
Compare your chronic pain before commencing with the treatment against the pain during.
Consult with your doctor. This can’t be stressed highly enough but always consult with your doctor, especially if you are considering moving away from conventional painkillers to CBD products.
There are some drug interactions that your doctor may want to discuss with you before you start CBD therapy.
Why Do You Need Dosage Guidelines?
Getting the right CBD oil dosage for you isn’t an exact science are there are so many variables. Starting with a low dosage will allow your body to acclimate to CBD.
You may have some mild side effects, such as mild stomach aches and a dry mouth. However, if you start with a low dosage, this will help eliminate the chance of this happening.
Maintaining the dosage before increasing is also important. You may not feel any effect, but CBD oil for pain does not always take effect immediately. In some cases, it may even take up to 30 days.
If you don’t feel any relief after a few days, try upping your dosage slightly. Repeat this process until you start to feel relief from your pain.
CBD is forever growing in popularity and awareness, which only helps further research.
