The psychoactive effects of cannabis are well documented, and it has suffered greatly from the stigma surrounding it as a recreational drug.
However, recently, cannabis has been able to shrug off the negative connotations as new research and development further proves the many beneficial qualities it provides.
The compound everyone is talking about is ‘CBD,’ which has been proven to support the body in various ways, from helping with pain management, anxiety, the immune system, and much more.
But what is the science behind this, and what sets full spectrum CBD apart from its psychoactive brother, THC?

The Science behind CBD
Discovered in the early 1990s, the endocannabinoid system is found in mammals and is responsible for complex actions on many of our bodily functions.
Endocannabinoids are produced within the body. That’s right; your body produces the same type of compounds found in cannabis!
The endocannabinoids we produce interact with our cannabinoid receptors. There are 2 types of cannabinoid receptors located throughout the body and central nervous system.
Not only do these receptors respond to our own endocannabinoids, but they also react to plant cannabinoids such as CBD.
When triggered, these receptors have been shown to control appetite, pain sensation, immune function, anxiety, cell growth, and many more.
There are many studies and comprehensive results to support these claims.
Hemp oil or CBD oil?
You may well have seen hemp oil for sale before, but there is a big difference between hemp oil and CBD oil.
Hemp oil is derived from hemp seeds that have been pressed to extract the oil. This oil contains very minimal amounts of CBD, usually less than 25 parts per million.
However, CBD oil is taken directly from cannabis flowers, leaves, and stalks that contain up to 15 percent CBD (150,000 ppm). Therefore, the extraction process is completely different and is what sets the CBD content apart.
That isn’t to say that hemp oil doesn’t have its uses. It has high levels of omega-3 and omega-6, making it ideal for cooking and as a food supplement. It can also be great as a lotion helping keep skin moisturised.
On an industrial scale, hemp oil can be used to create different forms of plastic, paints, and even bio-diesel.
CBD and THC
Both CBD and THC are products of the hemp plant (not the seeds). Therefore, CBD and THC share similar traits, but the key difference is that where THC produces strong psychoactive effects, CBD does not.
CBD and THC are both cannabinoids, which, as discussed earlier, are compounds that interact with our own endocannabinoid system to promote wellbeing.
There are also other cannabinoids found within the hemp plant, including cannabinol (CBN), cannabigerol (CBG), cannabichromene (CBC) as well as many others.
All of these cannabinoids have beneficial effects, but THC is the only one to produce a strong psychoactive effect.
